You can build a snow gauge with a few simple items.

Snow Gauge

Soak the 2-litre bottle in hot water for awhile and peel off the label

 

Use the scissors to cut off the topmost portion, leaving a straight-sided container. Try to be neat, it’s a challenge

 

Hold the ruler up against the bottom portion of the bottle and mark the outside of the bottle in inches or centimeters with the permanent marker

 

You now have your completed snow gauge!  Place it outside so it can collect the falling snow. 

 

Hint:  Place it out in the open away from buildings.  The gauge might not collect its share of falling snow due to blockage by nearby structures.

 

Check your snow gauge soon after it has stopped snowing, record the amount and empty it, or…
