Cup Anemometer

Robinson Cup Anemometer

- Armagh Observatory -

The simplest type of anemometer is the cup-anemometer, invented in 1846 by Dr. John T. R. Robinson, of Armagh Observatory in Ireland. It consists of three or four cups, mounted one on each end of horizontal arms, which are at 90° angles to each other.

The flow of air past the cups turns the cups at a speed that is proportional to the wind speed. Therefore, counting the RPMs of the cups gives the wind speed for a range of speeds.
